What is included
Clean out first
Weeds, old debris and leaves come out of the bed before anything goes down. Mulch spread over weeds just hides them for a month.
A clean edge
We re-cut the edge between the bed and the lawn so the mulch has somewhere to sit and stops washing into the grass.
Spread right
Two to three inches, even, pulled back from stems and siding. Brown, black or natural hardwood, delivered in bulk and spread by hand.

Common questions
How much does mulch installation cost?
It depends on the size of the beds and how many yards of mulch they take, so every job is quoted. Text a photo of the beds and Jake sends a price. Bulk mulch spread by us usually costs less than buying bags, once you count the bags, the trips and your weekend. Our mulch calculator on the blog gives a yardage estimate if you want a rough idea first.
How deep should mulch be?
Two to three inches. Thinner than that and weeds come through. Deeper and it holds too much water against stems and trunks. We spread to that depth and pull it back from plants and siding.
Do you weed the beds first?
Yes, every time. Weeds, old leaves and debris come out before the mulch goes in, and we re-cut the bed edge. That is most of the difference between a mulch job that looks good in June and one that does not.
Brown, black or natural, which is better?
All three are shredded hardwood and perform the same. Brown and black are dyed and hold color longer through the season. Natural hardwood is undyed and greys out sooner. Pick whichever fits the house. Most of our customers around Manhattan and New Lenox go with brown or black.
When should I mulch, spring or fall?
Either. Spring mulch is about looks and weed control for the season. Fall mulch protects roots through the winter and the beds look finished when the snow melts. Some customers do a lighter top-up each spring after a full install.
Do you deliver mulch without spreading it?
Our service is delivery and installation together. If you only want a pile dropped in the driveway, a bulk supply yard is the cheaper option for that.
