Front bed after overgrown foundation shrubs were removed, now gray rock with a curved concrete curb

What is included

Roots and all

Foundation shrubs planted when the subdivision went in 20 or 30 years ago are often over the windows now. They are dug out with the root ball, not cut off at the ground where many shrubs sprout right back. Holes are filled and the bed is raked level. This is shrubs and bushes only; tree removal and stump grinding are not part of it.

Ready for what comes next

Most removals turn into a bed makeover: weed fabric, rock or mulch, low-maintenance plants and a poured concrete border. On one front yard, overgrown foundation shrubs and old red rock came out and the bed became gray rock with a curved concrete curb. Quote both together and you never have a bare dirt bed waiting.

Dug with care

Pulling root balls means digging, and in Illinois the norm before any digging is a free JULIE utility locate through 811. JULIE only marks the utility companies' lines, so point out private lines like sprinkler pipe, invisible dog fence wire or landscape lighting before work starts.

Common questions

How much does bush removal cost?

It comes down to how many shrubs come out and how big they are. A few small shrubs along the foundation is a quick job; a row of mature yews with big root balls takes a lot more digging. Text a photo of the bed and Jake sends a free quote, often the same day. Hauling and disposal are spelled out on the quote, and there is no contract.

Do you remove the roots or just cut the bushes down?

Roots and all. Many shrubs cut off at the ground sprout right back, and a stump left in the bed makes it hard to plant, lay weed fabric or spread rock. The root balls are dug out, the holes are filled, and the bed is left level and ready for new plants, rock or mulch.

Do I need to call JULIE before removing shrubs?

Digging out root balls is digging, and in Illinois the norm is a free JULIE locate first: call 811 or submit online at least two days ahead, not counting weekends, holidays or the day of the request. Utilities only mark their own lines. Private lines such as sprinkler pipe, invisible dog fence wire, landscape lighting or a gas line to a grill are not marked, so point those out.

Can you remove trees or grind stumps?

No. Above the Lawn removes shrubs and bushes, including big overgrown yews, burning bush, old hedges and foundation plantings. Tree removal and stump grinding are not services Jake offers, so a tree or a large stump needs a tree service. Once that part is handled, the bed around it can still be cleared and redone.

Should I remove an overgrown shrub or cut it back?

It depends on the shrub. Many deciduous shrubs, such as spirea, forsythia, lilac and red-twig dogwood, can take a hard cutback and regrow, and yews sprout from old wood. Arborvitae and junipers do not regrow from bare brown wood, so once they are hollow or far too big they are usually better replaced. Jake will tell you which is which, and a cutback is quoted as trimming.

What goes in the bed after the shrubs come out?

Whatever you want to maintain. Many homeowners go low-maintenance: weed fabric, decorative rock in gray, black, white or blue-gray, a few easy plants and a poured concrete border. Others want fresh mulch and new shrubs sized for the space so they never cover the windows again. Removal and the new bed can be quoted together.
