Rock beds, installed start to finish

River Rock and Decorative Rock Landscaping in Manhattan, IL

Jake installs rock beds in Manhattan, New Lenox, Frankfort and Mokena. He is not a rock yard, so you get a finished bed, not a pile of stone on the driveway.

What is included

Old material out

Old mulch, sod, weeds and tired shrubs come out, roots and all, and are hauled away. Rock spread over old mulch or grass turns into a weed bed, so every rock bed starts from clean soil.

Shaped and graded

Beds are reshaped, often made bigger, with smooth curves that are easy to mow around. The soil is graded so water runs away from the house instead of toward the foundation.

Plants first, then fabric

Low-maintenance plants are placed where they will look right at full size before any rock goes down. Weed fabric then covers the bed around them, which keeps the rock from sinking into the clay soil.

Rock at full depth

Rock goes down 2 to 3 inches deep, enough that no fabric shows through. Thinner looks patchy, and piling it deeper costs more without stopping more weeds.

Rock matched to the house

Black, gray, white or blue-gray decorative rock, picked to go with your brick, siding and trim. Flagstone stepping stones can be set right into the bed for a path to the hose or the side door.

A finished edge

Every rock bed gets a real border so the rock stays out of the lawn and away from the mower. Choose a poured concrete curb in a plain, colored or stamped profile, or paver bullet edging.

Common questions

How much does river rock landscaping cost?

Every rock bed is a free quote, priced by the bed. The number comes from the square footage, the rock you pick, how much old mulch, rock or sod has to come out, any new plants, and the edge you want: a concrete curb priced by the foot or paver bullet edging. Text Jake a photo of the bed at (815) 520-2558 and you often get a price the same day. No contracts.

Do you sell landscape rock near me, or install it?

Jake installs rock beds. He is not a rock yard and does not sell or drop off loose rock. If you only need a pile of stone on the driveway, a landscape supply yard is the right call. If you want the old bed torn out, fabric down, plants in, rock spread and a clean edge finished, that is exactly the job, in Manhattan, New Lenox, Frankfort and Mokena.

Is rock or mulch better for my landscape beds?

Rock costs more up front but lasts for years, and it is the better pick along the foundation, walks and downspouts. Mulch costs less, feeds the soil and suits trees, shrubs and perennials, but it needs topping up every year or two. Many front yards look best with both: rock near the house, mulch around the plants. Our rock vs mulch guide compares cost, heat, weeds and leaves side by side.

Will a rock bed be maintenance-free?

Lower maintenance, not zero. Weed fabric holds back most weeds from the soil below, but seeds still blow in and sprout in the dust that settles between stones, so plan on pulling a few weeds each season. Leaves need to be blown out every fall, or they break down into the soil those weeds love. What you skip is the yearly mulch refresh.

Should I choose black, white or gray landscape rock?

Match it to the house. Black landscape rock looks sharp against red brick and makes green plants stand out. White landscape rock brightens tan brick and beige siding but shows leaves and dirt sooner. Gray and blue-gray rock suit gray brick, stone and darker siding. Send a photo of the front of the house and Jake will suggest a rock that ties into the brick, siding or trim.

Have you installed rock beds near me?

Yes. In New Lenox, Jake tore out an old bed, made it bigger and finished it with low-maintenance plants, rock and light gray paver bullet edging. In Frankfort, a bed got weed fabric, low-maintenance plants, rock matched to the house and paver bullet edging. Other jobs include overgrown foundation shrubs turned into a gray rock bed with a curved curb, and black rock beds with a flagstone path.
