What is included
Old shrubs out, roots and all
Overgrown yews, burning bush and builder shrubs that have swallowed the windows come out with their roots, so nothing resprouts in the new bed. Shrubs you want to keep can stay; just say which on the quote. If you only need a few shrubs gone, that is our bush removal service.
Beds reshaped, often bigger
In a lot of subdivisions the front beds are 20 to 30 years old and hug the foundation. New bed lines are painted on the lawn first so you can see the shape, usually deeper and curved so shrubs have room and the mower follows the edge in one pass. Weed fabric goes down under rock beds.
Foundation plantings that stay in scale
New shrubs are chosen by their full-grown size, not their size in the pot, and spaced so they stay below the windows without hard shearing every year. Expect low-maintenance shrubs, grasses and perennials, plus a small ornamental tree where the bed has room.
Rock or mulch
Decorative rock in black, gray, white or blue-gray matched to the brick or siding, or fresh bulk mulch spread over weeded beds. Rock skips the yearly top-up; mulch is kinder to the soil. Flagstone stepping stones can be set into a rock bed where people cut across it.
Tree rings and a permanent edge
A poured concrete curb runs along the beds and around front-yard trees, so the mower wheel rides the edge and most of the string trimming goes away. Plain, colored or stamped profiles, with optional LED lighting along the curb. Paver bullet edging is the other option on mulch beds.
A clean finish, and what this is not
The bed lines meet the walk and driveway cleanly, so the front reads as one finished design. This service covers beds, plants, rock, mulch, tree rings and curbing. Paver walkways and patios are not part of it.

Common questions
How much does front yard landscaping cost?
It depends on how much comes out and what goes in. The price is driven by the size of the beds, how many old shrubs and how much old rock or edging has to be removed, rock versus mulch, the number and size of new plants, and the feet of concrete curbing, which is priced by the foot after measuring. Text photos of the front of the house and Jake quotes it, often the same day. No contracts.
What should I plant around my house foundation?
Shrubs whose full-grown size fits the spot: compact boxwood, a low spreading yew or a dwarf panicle hydrangea under windows, a dwarf lilac at the corners, and grasses or perennials in front. Illinois Extension advises keeping plants about a foot and a half off the foundation, where the soil stays dry, and spacing spreading shrubs at their full width. Jake picks plants for the sun or shade on your side of the house.
Should I use rock or mulch in my front beds?
Rock lasts for years without a top-up, which suits foundation strips and tree rings where you want the least work. Mulch feeds the soil as it breaks down and is easier on plants, but it should be checked and topped up about once a year. Plenty of front yards use both. Jake can price each so you can compare them on your own beds.
Can you redo just one bed instead of the whole front yard?
Yes. A single bed, such as the strip under the front windows, is a landscape bed renovation and is quoted on its own. Front yard landscaping is for when the whole front needs pulling together: every bed, the tree rings, the edging and the line along the walk and driveway, planned as one design so it all matches.
Do you install paver walkways or patios?
Not with our own crew. If a new walk or patio is part of your plans, mention it on the quote request and Jake will tell you how he can handle it. Front yard jobs cover beds, plants, decorative rock, mulch, tree rings and poured concrete curbing. Flagstone stepping stones set into a rock bed are part of the work, as on one front walk where new black rock beds got a flagstone path. If you are also planning a new walk, have it built first and the beds shaped around it.
